Granite Countertop Choices

By Kelly Gillis

It was estimated that 4 million people remodeled their kitchens in 2005. That means that a lot of people were trying to decide on what type of countertop they wanted. The choice of a countertop has a huge effect on the final outcome of every kitchen remodel. The least of your worries will be what color to choose, it will probably be what product will be the best counter for your use.

There are many different types of countertop products to choose from today. If you don't have a large budget you may want to choose something like a laminate or a maple. However, if price is no object you may want to splurge and purchase a granite countertop.

One of the first things to consider before choosing your countertop is your cooking and cleaning habits. Be realistic about these. You don't want to pay top dollar for a product that won't perform the way you want it to and you don't want to choose a product that requires maintenance you don't want to be bothered doing. If you're an avid cook and want to chop directly on a countertop then a laminate isn't for you. However, if you don't want to bother with sealing a granite countertop then it's an investment you don't want to make.

Laminates, ceramic tiles and wooden countertops all have their down sides. They scratch and can be difficult or impossible to repair if they are scratched, grout between tiles can discolor, and wood can become scarred through use with knives and can be burned if a hot pot is set on it.

Granite and other natural stones are far more durable than other products such as laminate or ceramic tiles. Those who sell granite will tell you that you will pay more for granite up front but it will outlast any other countertop product - actually a granite countertop should outlast you!! If it's kept properly sealed a granite countertop is very scratch and stain resistant and it can also handle hot pots and pans being set directly on it.

Granite countertop installation isn't something to be tried by a do-it-yourselfer. Granite can break easily during installation if it is turned or twisted improperly. Also as it is a natural stone there will be some unevenness in the countertop that will need proper supporting from beneath.
